Timing Chain Recall? #10287

Took my 07 Outlook XR AWD to the dealer yesterday for an oil change and the service writer said that a (very) new recall had been issued for my vehicle in the past week. According to my service paperwork the recall is # "10287 - Premature Timing Chain Wear - Reprogram Engine Control Module."

I see several posts here mentioning stretched timing chains - but nothing about a related recall. I bought it in May 07 and only have about 22K miles so I'm hoping this recall will prevent a future problem. But, I'm still curious....

Does anyone know anything about this?

Is it possible damage has been done already w/ 22K miles?

How does reprogramming the engine control module stop premature wear?

Thanks!

There was detailed talk about this on the Acadia forum...I will try to post a link a little later.

The reprogramming entails lengthening the time it takes for the check engine light to illuminate (from 4 to 10 seconds...not sure why) and to reprogram the OLM to a much shorter interval. The cojecture is that the chain stretches because of worn out oil, but some people have surmised bad chain lots as well.

As for the damage, what were your oil change habits (length and type), driving conditions and your climate? Used oil analysis of these engines shows the OLM goes way to long even for synthetic oil.

2009 Chevrolet Traverse
2007 GMC Acadia
2009 GMC Acadia
2007 Saturn OUTLOOK
2009 Saturn OUTLOOK
Equipped with HFV6 Engine

Due to the availability of the required calibration, this program is being administered in
phases. This first phase will include the Cadillac vehicles only. You will receive a dealer
message when the calibration and VINs are being released for the remainder of the
vehicles.

THIS PROGRAM IS IN EFFECT UNTIL FEBRUARY 28, 2013.

CONDITION
On certain 2007 model year GMC Acadia; Saturn OUTLOOK; 2007-2009 model year Cadillac
CTS, SRX, STS; 2009 model year Buick Enclave; Chevrolet Traverse; GMC Acadia; and Saturn
OUTLOOK vehicles equipped with a HFV6 engine, under certain driving conditions, and with
extended oil change intervals, the timing chain could wear prematurely and cause the
illumination of the Service Engine Soon light.

CORRECTION
Dealers are to reprogram the engine control module, including the engine oil life monitor.

VEHICLES INVOLVED
Involved are certain 2007 model year GMC Acadia; Saturn OUTLOOK; 2007-2009 model year
Cadillac CTS, SRX, STS; 2009 model year Buick Enclave; Chevrolet Traverse; GMC Acadia;
and Saturn OUTLOOK vehicles equipped with a HFV6 engine
Important: Dealers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using the
Required Field Actions section in the Global Warranty system.
For dealers with involved vehicles, a listing with involved vehicles containing the complete
vehicle identification number, customer name, and address information has been prepared and
will be provided to US and Canadian dealers through the GM GlobalConnect Recall Reports, or
sent directly to export dealers. Dealers will not have a report available if they have no involved
vehicles currently assigned.

The listing may contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle
Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other
than follow-up necessary to complete this program is a violation of law in several
states/provinces/countries. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the
follow-up necessary to complete this program.

Dear General Motors Customer:
This notice is sent to inform you that General Motors is conducting a Customer Satisfaction
Program that affects 2007 model year GMC Acadia; Saturn OUTLOOK; 2007-2009 model year
Cadillac CTS, SRX, STS; 2009 model year Buick Enclave; Chevrolet Traverse; GMC Acadia;
and Saturn OUTLOOK vehicles equipped with a V6 engine.

Your vehicle was designed and built to meet GM's high standards for quality and reliability.
However, we have determined that under certain driving conditions, and with extended oil
change intervals, the timing chain could wear prematurely and cause the illumination of the
Service Engine Soon light. Timing chain wear can be affected by the age of the engine oil and
driving conditions.

What We Will Do:
To ensure that your vehicle will not experience this condition, your GM
dealer will change the calibration of the engine control module, including the engine oil life
monitor, which in most cases will recommend more frequent oil changes. This calibration
change will be performed for you at no charge until February 28, 2013.

What You Should Do:
To limit any possible inconvenience, we recommend that you contact
your dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment for this repair.

Re: Timing Chain Recall? #10287

Interesting that it'll mean more frequent OLM recommended changes. My 2010 isn't on the list, so I assume that either I have the new calibration or a new timing chain design. My OLM will go 10K+ if I let it, so if that's more frequent, what was it?

The cynic in me says the increase in the warning condition is so it's more likely to go out of warranty before it fails. Of course, it may be that the old interval was too conservative and GM was paying to replace chains that weren't really bad.

Re: Timing Chain Recall? #10287

Thanks for the great information. I've generally ignored the OLM and stuck to oil changes near 5K miles. Most of the miles on my Outlook are under city driving conditions in a mild climate. I'll keep an eye on the OLM and see if remaining life seems to drop faster with the reprogramming.

Hmm, I've got about 70k on the clock on my Outlook so I hope I'm not "really" in that area where all of these timing chain issues are. I would hope that I would have noticed something by now. Watch, my motor will go to poop tomorrow and won't have any warranty to do anything about it.

Two timing chain replacements in one day I wonder if they left the engine installed and dropped all the right wheel equipment to gain access
