youre right- but at least theres some sort of paper trail that items were purchased (that fit the vehicle). Will it work in court? who knows...but at least theres some proof. Hope I never have to resort to such a battle.

I currently have 6023 miles on my 2010 Traverse. I changed the factory oil  at 1657 miles.  So this oil has 4366 miles on it- and the DIC is showing 58% oil life left.

Im wondering when I should change this fill.... 50% oil life left... or 5000, 6000 miles?

I would say change it at 5K, seeing that you live in or around L.A. I can imagine that alone is tough on an engine.

my trailblazer was used in the same conditions (rush hr morning and evenings)-- and I was surprissed at those nice oil analysis results....

If those 4.2's are anything like the 4.3's they are easy on the oil  thumbs up.

rbarrios,

Like 6Sixathome, I would do the first change @ the 5,000 mile mark.  Your analysis I would think would mirror the UOA I just posted.  I AM curious to see if your viscosity #s are any different then mine were (which were on the slightly lower side).  It would be a sort of benchmark for your vehicle to decide whether you could:

     1.  Continue with the same dino oil, extending your change to 7,000 or more miles

     2.  Switch to another dino oil, changing at the same 5,000 mile interval.

     3.  Switch to a synthetic like Mobil 1, again changing at the same 5,000 mile interval.

Doing the above would give you some confidence you are on the right path to extended oil life...and more importantly NOT beating up your DI engine.

I add it goes without saying to note what your oil life monitor says at the time of your changes.  The goal is to build confidence in the monitoring sensor which should truly reflect what the oil analysis from the lab says.  My last change, although the oil was in the motor for only 2,600 miles, showed the oil monitor stating I had 77% of oil life and the oil anlaysis commentary supported that.

I was a Wally World today and almost bought PP for $1.00 more than M1. I shall see what my UOA says after this run on M1 (I've got 1,400 miles to go before the oil change which will bring me to 5K on this oil).

Whether you use Penz Plat or M1, keep an eye out for rebates.  Both recently had $10 per 5qt container.  Makes it really reasonable!

What do you guys think of the AMSOIL claim to 25K between changes? What about Royal Purple?

My thoughts exactually. 25K is alot of miles for oil.

I have seen UOAs on Amsoil in large capacity diesel engines that have added filtration units.  With these, they change the filter every 5-10K, but the filters hold a few quarts of oil, freshening up some of the additives.

I have also seen a sludged up diesel that had Amsoil in it.  The >$10K engine was not repaired under warranty because the manufacturer (F) length of oil change was exceeded.  The owner was trying to get Amsoil to pay.  He dropped off that board when he wasn't getting satisfation from people telling him what he didn't want to hear, that F shouldn't pay for his costly repair.

Morale of this post, follow GMs change recomendations or prepare to litigate if you have a problem.  At a minimum, UOAs would be needed so is the cost really any cheaper than a good synthetic?

I' m still waiting on the test kit from Blackstone. I ordered one but it never came ( after 3 weeks) so I called the other day and ordered another one. I wonder if it got held up with USPS because of it's shape? Has anyone else had trouble getting a test kit when ordered?

Mine came pretty quickly.  After I did a few UOAs and requesting more kits a 3rd time, they sent me a box with like 10 of them....good for a while.

Although you can mail these samples via the self addressed black bottle that is part of the sample kit it has been my experience that the oil samples get to BLACKSTONE more quickly if you mail them in a (very) small box or a packing 'envelope'. I think that the black cylindrical bottles too often attract the attention of postal inspection. Undecided
