Has anyone had any problems with the sunroof leaking? I have 2007 Outlook which I purchased back in Jan 07. I have had to take it back to the dealers 4 times now for the same problem.

Below are comments about the problem I have made as well as links to 3 other threads from other sites that deal with the issue.

Good Luck.

Below are several posts I had with my experience on my Outlook (from an Outlook site). My understanding is that the 08's are corrected. Look not only at the sunroof drain but also the luggage racks. If you have an 07 and have not had any problems, make the dealer check and fix it before you do.

December 17th - We had not had any significant rain in Amarillo since I got my 07 back in June, and I had not had a problem while washing mine. Last week we had rain and mine started leaking down the drivers side seat belt, headliner and down into the emergency brake housing (flooding the floor board).

Dealer told me they were aware of the problem but that GM did not want to issue a recall since it may not effect everyone. Problem was that the drain tube on the moonroof was not connected, infact it was two inches short (they new this in production?). Dealer got in the fix kit, and did the work in one day. To dry out my truck the ran the engine (how long I don't know but it changed the MPG avg reading by 2) and ran the heat in the truck at 90 degrees.

I went to wash mine yesterday, and foud that it was leaking again over the drivers side. I be taking it in again.

January 3rd - I had the dealership fix the sunroof leak (tube not connected at factory, they had a repair kit for this, GM new about the problem [according to the dealership] but choose not to say anything and handle them on a problem by problem situation]. Since that was fixed I still had problems, and we think it was the luggage rack connections (mentioned by others previously). They went through and sealed anything that could be sealed, got all the stains out of the headliner and floor, time will tell but I feel confident that it has been corrected. The dealership was very accommodating and have taken care of the problems without hassle.

January 9th - Update: 1 rainstorm & 1 carwash = no leak!! Looks like it was the roof rack the second time around and the dealer got it fixed. They are also going to do a leather treatment on my seats as a courtesy for my troubles. They have bent over backwards for me. The service department manager has called me a couple of times to make sure everything is okay - what service!

January 15th - It wasn't that the hoses were shrinking up, they were never contected to begin with - to short. Glad your's is fixed.

January 5th - I had mine in again last week because of a leak again. It was the luggage rails. The way the sit, the rubber gaskit does not sit flush with the roof (it hangs over a narrow valley (for lack of a better word) and allows water to get up inside the bracket and run down the screw holes. They went through and sealed all of the screw holes with silicone, which should do the trick. From what I understand they have corrected the problem with the sunroofs in the 08's with a correct size drain tube. I would go for it.

January 7th - The dealership was wonderful and has fixed any of the problems. My beef is with GM and plant managers not fixing the problem when the found it at the factory. Seems to me a one day shut down and fix the tubes would have saved them money in the long run although it would have cost more for that one day. If these guys are fighting for our money you would think they would want to give us an error free car/truck (of course there would be exceptions for the un-forseen) to begin with.

khansen30 thanks for the feedback. I wish I would have known about this site before. The dealership I took mine too never heard of any problems thru GM. 1st they adjusted the sunroof's screws, the 2nd time around they replaced the windshield, the 3rd time around they replaced the sunroof's glass and the 4th time they realized that is was coming from the back moon roof and also something to do with these holes not being connected and forgot to plug them. Unfortunately after 4 visits and 41 days without my vehicle I still have this leak. The only good news is that they are goping to replace my vehicle with a new 2008.

Had my Outlook since Aug 07 and travelled about 17000km (10625mi) with it. After reading this thread I decided to check out the floor boards. Bad news, I noticed rust marks running around the metal linked to the emergency brake. I realized then that there has been a leak in the vehicle for a while. I wasn't imagining it after all. It happens after a car wash or heavy rain. The common signs are the resting foot pedal getting wet. Having it checked this week...let's see what's the excuse this time :(

I believe the issue is with drain lines, either being too short or not connecting properly, which then allows water to spill out in unwanted ways...to the interior.

Has been a common Acadia/Outlook/Enclave thing, most of which dealers should actually be able to fix...but I've seen at least 2 Enclaves be repurchased after the leaks resulted in 3+ unsuccessful dealer repair trips. GM acknowledged the issue, and didn't put up much of a fight for the buybacks in those cases.

Here, the dealers need to get schooled quickly from GM by looking into their service bulletins for descriptions and fix details, and/or get in touch with their GM help and try to get the leaks fixed. If not, and it's tried multiple times, may be time for a buyback.

I agree. The drain lines were too short and did not and never were connected. The service guy at my Saturn told me that, and they (factory) were aware of it at the time but did not want to correct and were going to let the dealers fix on whenever somebody had a leak, hoping that those in areas were it does not rain that much would not notice/have a problem thus saving money on the fix. It took 2 visits to get mine fixed, but, my dealer got my Outlook fixed and cleaned and put back together correctly so that it looks new. I couldn't be happier! :thumb:

Now if all the other dealers would be as attentive, these problems could be fixed quickly and with out hassle. Sometimes the dealer plays dumb, but when they have people like those of us on these forums talking and figuring out their mistakes they start to sit up and take notice. I think at some of my urging my dealer now looks at these forums too to see the problems going on and I don't get those lame exuses as to the problems. The next generation of the Lambdas will be better thanks to the first two years of the new owners. I must say though that I hear of alot more problems with the Acadia's and Enclave engines and transmissions than the Outlooks. I don't know if it is because they are more picky or if the differences in the vehicles is that great. But some of the problems they are having I have never had.

I made an appointment with my Saturn dealer and gave him heads up on my problem. He sounded very surprise and told me he never heard of a leaking problem. My appointment is set for next week. Well, it rained the last couple of days in Montreal. My floor boards were soaked! While driving, I could see the streams of water running along the plastic side on the passenger side. I can't believe what I saw. I also suspect this is happening since day one when my vehicle was manufactured and exposed to the outdoors. There are rust marks in the inside cabin on exposed metal. I highly recommend all those who purchased one during the first few days to take it to the carwash or leave it out it the rain. If you see a problem, you can return the vehicle for a new one in the first 30 days (I don't know about the US but it applies to Canada). TBC.

Same for the US. I find it very hard to believe that your dealer has not heard of this problem except that they are not supposed to advertise it. This has been a problem across all three lines although it was supposed to have been corrected for newer 08's. What year is yours and what was the build date? That info will help other owners depending on their build date.

I have the same problem with my 2008 Outlook....I had it in 4 times and they couldnt find it. I told them about this topic and they said it wasn't from that. Then they called me after I brought it in again an said it was from the drain of the rear skylight. I have been in contact with Saturn customer care and lets see what I can get out of this.

We're thinking of getting an 09 Outlook with a sunroof. Can anybody get GM to correct this problem in their assembly line so that the 09s don't have this problem? My 02 Yukon has never had a leak from the sunroof. It seems ridiculous that GM doesn't care about making some changes in their assembly process to eliminate this problem. You know customer service is a great thing! Hope all you people get your leaky sunroofs fixed properly. But you got to wonder what damage has been done to the interior hidden components of your vehicles. Good luck!

Yeah it kind of makes you wonder if you really want to trade in a perfectly good vehicle for one that may have leaks. It's really strange and you think they could easily solve this problem. It really just shows poor assembly and some workers that really don't care including the company! It's obvious from reading these posts that someone at GM doesn't care or the problem would have been solved a long time ago! Maybe I should just keep my nonleaking Yukon.

#18 ·
Just because the problem hasn't been fully resolved doesn't mean that the workers don't care.
It may be due to a step in the build process. Possibly a change in the order that parts are put in would alleviate the problem. The sunroof drains may be inadvertantly pulled or dislodged and the seams not sealed because of the order of assembly.

If you look at some of the posts in this subject, people are saying that the drain lines were either too short or were never connected and that the factory did not fix them thinking that those that leaked would be fixed by the dealers. Well that is not acceptable and shows somebody doesn't care. It may be the line boss or the line assembly worker at that time but when you spend $35-40k on a vehicle, it better be put together as good as possible. Hopefully it has been addressed and the new ones won't have that problem. But think of the hassle the unfortunate people who bought the leakers had to go through! Unacceptable, and I'm not bashing the American worker, I own a Yukon and a Mustang GT and am thinking of buying an 09 Outlook (with a sunroof).

Mine seems to be leaking too  2008 XR - bult Aug 2007, so early 2008 model. Got it as 'demo' a month ago. Doesn't (didn't) show any signs (stains) of water leaks neither on the headliner, nor the floor, but apparently either the time has come :banghead: or I just did not see it (may be leak is minor compared to others I read here in this thread ).

So I saw water dripping on the passenger side A pillar, the bottom right corner of the glovebox this morning after a rainy night (car is not garaged). Saw a trail of water drops the last time it rained at the same spot, but the carpet felt dry, I decided water drops must have been introduced by me opening the wet door. Today however I checked more throughly and it indeed had water inside the trim on the corner where the glovebox is - so can't be me opening the wet door.

Made an appointment to have dealer check it. They mentioned they have had only one leaking Outlook so far (hard to believe judging by the amount of complaints I see here and on other msg boards).

Hopefully they will have mine waterproof without additional visits...

I just had my 07' XR in for that same thing, the water was dripping by where the glove box is. It was fixed under this bulletin ID# 2146761. They had to reseal a body seam in the cowl area. The tech also inspected and cleaned the sunroof drain lines.

Just to add to the pain - yesterday evening there was a short downpour and I ran in the car to inspect how is the "water flowing" - beside the the passenger side at the glovebox corner, water drips off the parking brake pedal on the driver side and soaking the carpet below :banghead: :banghead:
Hopefully they will be able to seal it off

Update: got mine back. Quick garden hose test does not reveal further leaking. However I think it is too early to celebrate (judging from others experience in this thread). I guess it will show next time it rains. This year we seem to get pretty wet weather up here in Toronto, I am sure it is going to be soon..

Mine has gone in 3 times for this issue. It has not rained yet so the true test cannot be done untill then. Mine only leaked when it rained and not the carwash ???, but whatever I was assured it is completly fixed so we will see and I hope it is fixed.

... and indeed :banghead: leaking again. In again. :sosad:
Did they do both sides? Do you have luggage racks & did you have them seal the bolts on them as well?

Sorry if you answered this earlier couldn't find it.

Both sides leaked on mine at different times and water came in around the luggage rack seams.
