$95 code reading fee from GM Dealership

Trying to help out my girlfriend who has a 07 Outlook with 70,000 miles (built 03/07) with the p0017 code. From this forum I have found that this code usaully means a stretched timing chain. The code was pulled by Autozone. I change her oil every 3-5k miles, not sure if this helped with making the chain last a little longer than some I have read about

The car was brought to an Auth GM dealership today and she showed the service advisor the ticket from Autozone and was told they still have to pull the code by their scanner and that it would be $95. They pulled the same code, said it would take 30-60 days to get the parts for the timing chain and also that her airbag light was also causing the check engine light and charged her $95. To fix the air bag for the passenger seat , appr $1000...

Anyone else get charged the diagnostic fee if the repair is covered under warranty? I kind of thought that charge was a little out of line..

Thanks,
Tom

I think you would have a good chance of getting the $95.00 charge refunded if you follow up with the service manager. If that doesn't work, then start climbing the ladder according to your owner's manual of who to contact. 30-60 days is ridiculous to wait for parts, unless there are more lambdas out there with stretched chains than we all know about! Between them charging the $95.00 and the 30-60 days wait for the parts, I would be going to a different GM dealer!

Search the various forums for the airbag light. There have been several recalls and TSB's about the passenger airbag light coming on.

Thanks ls973800!

I may pay this dealership a visit and act calmly about this charge. I am definitly taken the car to a different dealership, to bad it is 70 miles away.

She almosted asked if she would have just let the motor destroy itself if they still would have charge her the fee.

Also I did find a lot of TSB, Etc about the air bag but they just seem to not want to fix it.

Thanks again man,
Tom

You can take it to ANY GM dealership, it does'nt have to be a Saturn authorized service provider. I'm having work done on mine at a Chevy/Buick/GMC dealer 5 miles away. Yours IS still under the 5yr/100K powertrain warranty so ANY diagnostics done the are related to the timing chain issue should not be charged to you. 30 to 60 days for a timing set is people on the forums are getting them fixed in the same week. Do yourself a favor and find a new dealer.

Re: $95 code reading fee from GM Dealership

So here is an email from my girlfriend about what was actually said at the dealership.... This is after me pulling the P0017 code...

---It's not a part I have to wait for but an computer upgrade. I questioned that and she said that is what it is taking to fix the problem. I question that but got a canned response. She kept pointing to that the real issue for the light coming on was the airbag sensor. I told that was odd since it's been on and no engine light came on for it before. I told her I was not fixing the sensor on airbag just yet.---

Just read about this update on one of the Lambda forums..

So no new timing chain! I'm going to have a nice talk with this service advisor who claims the air bag light that has been on for the last 10,000 miles is just now causing a Check Engine light with a P0017 code... To fix the code, girlfriend was told have to spend $1000+ on an air bag part or the check engine light will keep going off for the same thing

I think that dealer does'nt have a clue, the air bag sensor is'nt going to make the CEL come on, it's going to make the air bag light come on, a 2nd opinion from another dealer is needed, maybe call a few dealers and see if and how many timing chains they have replaced in these Lambda vehicles, dont say OUTLOOK's say Acadia's Enclave's & Traverse's, if you ask OUTLOOK's they may not have done any because they are not a Saturn dealer. Has your GF had this OUTLOOK since new?

Yes, she has had it since new. And your right, they don't have a clue. I'm going up there Monday and going to put them on the spot about how a programming isssue can fix a mechanical problem. From what I read the reprogram only changes the OLM.

Will call around.. Thanks Again for all your advice... I'm going to have fun with this one
