Re: 2009 XR Intermittent pulsating at highway speeds
I had the same issue, dealer was not able to ever feel it, but of course,
I felt it all the time. They even changed the torque converter, but no change. Finally traced it to coil packs, and replaced 2. A few months later, a third one went, replaced that myself.
If I recall, the computer won't store the fault codes for the failing coil packs until the problem is pretty severe. It's been a while, but I know trouble codes didn't get stored every time the car shuttered, or seemed to lag between gears, etc. Luckily, I have an AutoXray, so when trouble code light came on, I was able to figure out which pack needed replacing.
I read somewhere, and it seems to be the case, the packs start to go at about 80k, if
I recall. I think another one may be in the early stages of failing now, but no code has set yet. Luckily, it's not a real difficult job.
I'd be very reticent to pay for a torque converter if I were you. I know it's a pain, but I'd hold out to see if a trouble code sets that can be traced to another pack.
