Wave plate is now covered for an extended amount of time and miles! Reimbursement can be applied for any previously made repairs and costs out of pocket!

Re: 2008 Saturn Outlook - Transmission FAIL - joining the club...

Just had my Outlook at the dealership for intermittent overheating, and they mentioned that the timing chain and wave plate should also be changed...all of which he said was under a special warranty extension. I knew the water pump was, so when it started occasionally running high temps and noticed a few small leaks, I took it in to get checked out. This was last fall, and the local dealer said he couldn't find any issues.

I recently moved to NC and having the temps fluctuate more often. This time I didn't mention anything immediately about the TSB and special warranty on the pump. As soon as he called to tell me the water pump is bad, I reminded him of the warranty coverage. Then he also noticed the timing chain and wave plate could also be changed under the special warranty. My Outlook is a 2007 at 113k miles.

I'm paying for a few other items done like throttle body cleaning, but the service guy told me the rest is covered. I sure hope so. It's been in the shop 3 days now and will be another 4 before it might be done.

I had mine rebuilt at 140,000. PM the GM moderator who posts on these forums. They feel our pain, lets see if they actually help.

Almost caused a massive pile up, but managed to get over and off the beltline. Pulled into parking lot at gas station, and car would barely move. I noticed for the last week or so it seemed to be shifting strange, but as long as I didn't mash the gas, it seemed fine. I had the car towed to a GM dealer, but they have not looked at it yet. Question, is there anything I can do for help with the bill? I have been reading around, and have seem many different stories with many different results, but the standard response seems to be that GM is aware of the problem, but does nothing. is that what I can probably expect? The dealer said they would be calling me tomorrow, and want to have my ducks in a row.
I realize that this is most likely a too late response but you can receive financial assistance by contacting Saturn Customer Service at: 1 (800) 553-6000

Had the 3/5/R fail at 72k. Was about 8 months over on warranty yet still within miles. Called GM and after some finger crossing and praying ended up only having to pay half of the repair... $1400 out the door. Turns out that the dealer wanted to simply replace the tranny but GM told them to open it up and inspect. Turns out my AMAZING wife noticed the trouble as soon as it started slipping, called me and stopped driving it. Since the wave plate was only cracked and not shattered it did not grenade the entire tranny. They did a full rebuild and flush along with a 12k warranty. Very pleased about how GM stepped up and helped even though I do not get my vehicles serviced at the dealer (from a long line of auto mechanics and normally service myself). If you notice ANY flare (sudden rise in RPM between gears) stop driving and have someone take a look. It will save you $.

I'm new the forums and I suspect like many of you here, only found this forum after searching for various problems with our Saturn Outlooks. I of course have become the latest victim of the Outlook transmission failure that I've read so much about these past few hours online. Before I go into where I am at..quick overview of my vehicle.

close to 100,000 where youd probably be doing a transmission fluid flush--- which some shops will charge $200-300.

For $600 or so---- have the wave plate CHANGED- and new trans fluid added........ and avoid the $4000 repair bill.

here are the details.

Rbarrios,Thanks for all the information. Something to think about. I was speaking with a mechanic and told him of the wave plate failures and he was wondering approximately what percentage of the vehicles experienced the failure.
Will this wave plate failure be certain? Who knows.
I just put 1200.00 in the vehicle for tires and brakes. How much more do I want to dish out for a now 7 years old vehicle?( purchased OCT '07)
BTW I have the FWD model.

yes the same transmission in all models--- except the FWD and AWD models.

But the tow package is the same trans.
the difference is the HD radiator for increased engine and trans cooling-- and modified shift points....
