Re: **Resolved** Weird intermittent humming noise...

Took it in to the dealer today. Turns out one of the brake pads is stuck in it's slide against the rotor. They're blaming corrosion. Have about 5% of the outer pad remaining, inside is 95%. We should have noticed that when we had the wheel off 3 weeks ago; I think a lot of that wear has been done lately since it has gotten worse.

They think my caliper and pistons and everything are fine and my rotor can be turned. $279 for pads and rotor turn! I think my brother will be doing that. They were apparently able to get the bolts off without an issue too.

Re: **Update** Weird intermittent humming noise...

Bloc0102,

Thank you for the update about your Outlook. I was glad to read that you have contacted your dealership and they will take care of this under warranty if it proves to be something that is not normal wear and tear. Please, keep me informed of your visit.

Here is an idea for you; when you take it in on Monday talk with the techs about the nuts that you cannot get off. They could possibly assist you with that or tell you what you could use to get them off. I know that there is a spray that can help get stubborn nuts and bolts to break free, but I canít remember the name of it. Sorry! Just remember I am not a tech, but I thought that it would be worth a shot! LOL

Have a great weekend!

Re: **Update** Weird intermittent humming noise...

Okay, so this issue took a little turn for the worse now. The noise was the worst it's ever been on my 8 mile drive home yesterday. When I got home and got out, I could immediately smell burning brakes, and there was a TON of heat coming out of that left rear wheel. Went and felt the fronts, and could hardly feel any heat. After it cooled down some, it seemed that there was more heat coming from the disc part of the rotor than the drum. So, I'm now wondering if it has something to do with my calipers or brake pads. Or if it has to do with those two nuts holding the calipers on that we couldn't get off with the impact wrench. Maybe they were over-torqued at the factory and that twisted something in there and they're not releasing fully? I want the dealer to check the torque on them; my brother thought they should only be torqued to 80 ft lbs and the 500 ft lb impact didn't get them off... Anybody have a good idea of what they should be torqued to? They're on the back side of the rotor and hold on the brake assembly.

Drove to work this morning, no noise and no heat. Taking it to the dealer on Monday. They said they'd take a look at it and work with me under warranty as long as it's not a regular brake issue since I'm only at 39k. If it's some sort of normal wear, I'd have the option to fix it or not, it didn't sound like they'd charge me anything. However, if it is something I'd want to fix it myself, I still can't get those nuts off!

Bloc0102,

Thank you for the additional information about your situation. You are correct, that can prove to be difficult and frustrating. However, there is always the avenue of talking with the dealership about getting a loaner so that you can get proper diagnostics of what you are experiencing with your 2008 Saturn Outlook.

Sincerely,

That could prove difficult since once the car gets hot, the noise goes away. So, once I got it to the dealership, the noise will have subsided. I'd have to leave it at the dealership to cool down, and I can't be without a car for a day...

Re: **Update** Weird intermittent humming noise...

Thanks for your post Michelle,

No new information other than it happens quicker into my trips now that it is warmer out (5 miles instead of 10). So, it seems that some part has to be warm enough to cause it, but then when it gets hot, it stops. I think I'll stop by the dealership some day and show them the squeak when the car is rocked back and forth and see if they have any ideas or would be willing to look into it.

To be honest, I'm thinking about trading it off for the new Dodge Durango...

I would have to agree with AA/78U about the diagnostic fee. I know around my area, there are dealerships that will charge the diagnostic fee, but take the amount that they charge for the diagnosis and put it towards the parts and labor of the repair work.

Depends on the dealer, but I would expect them to

Well, that didn't help, noise came back today. I'm leaning more and more towards a wheel bearing, or it having something to do with that squeak in the driveshaft. If I take it in, and they find out it's not covered by the powertrain warranty, do they charge me for the diagnosis?
