I received the letter from GM (Canada), but I am in an '09 MY. It is VIN dependent from what I understand.

EDIT: It's just reprogramming the OLM.

I got the notice and when I brought it in to have the transmission software upgrade my car had not had yet - (for 07s and 08s shifts to overdrive too early and leaves a 'power hole' - service bulletin #08-07-30-022), they said this update took care of that too because it updates the engine control module (ECM). Not sure I believe it, is the ECM the same as the Transmission control module (TCM)?. Anyway just got it back so I will test it out.

The ECM and TCM are not the same. Each has its respective functions to manage.

ECM = Engine Control Module
TCM = Transmission Control Module
BCM = Body Control Module

For the benefit of others, please report back on your findings with the trans update you had applied to your vehicle. Note that after your vehicle has the TCM update, it may take a little while for the vehicle to 're-learn'. A couple of weeks of driving your normal routine should more than cover it.
