Flash programming is just like how your memory card works in your digital camera or iPod, etc. Theoretically you could just be 'unlocking' certain features within the programming code already resident within the BCM - thus just using what's already there, but by the same token it could be rewritten in its entirety. I'm not certain what method is employed.
