Does your air conditioner kick in when you just want to recirculate the air as opposed to using the outside air? I thought this to be weird as none of my other cars with air re-circ does this.

Mine doesn't, but it does seem to default to fresh which I hate!!

Check your manual, it discusses that specifically. I can't remember what it says exactly, but I do remember reading about it specifically. It is not that uncommon for some cars to kick the AC on when you want recirculated air in order to prevent fogging of the windows. It's used to dry the air.
