The Auto-Dimming mirror on our 2008 Outlook XR has always been dimmed since the day we bought it. It could be the sunniest day out and the mirror would be fully dimmed. We have brought it to the dealer and all the techs had absolutely no clue what the problem could be. Currently the only solution is to hold the power button on the mirror for a couple seconds every time the car is started to turn it off. Anyone else have this issue and come up with any fixes? Also if someone has a wiring diagram for the mirror I'd like to see if the problem could be fixed by giving the sensor a constant power source or just cutting a wire. Thanks in advance.

Fortunately mine does not dim during the day. But I still do not like the auto dimming feature at all. I had never had one before so I was not familiar with it....and it came with the '08 XR. If it was up to me I'd like to keep the compass on all the time and never have the autodimming feature come on. It is a pain to have to hold that button 5 seconds every time you cut the vehicle on at night to cut the auto dimming feature off....

If I had your problem I would have the dealer replace it because if it dims in the day then it is malfuctioning.

I have not experienced the auto dimming outside mirrors, but I do love the inside rear view mirror dimming automatically!

The Driver side mirror is auto dimming
This is an option. Or it is included within a package of options. Not all drivers side mirrors are auto dimming.

It is the Enhanced Convenience Pkg that has the auto dimming drivers side mirror.

Hope you get the problem figured out!

For those who don't like this option, why is that? I personally love the option and haven't yet found any reason to turn it off, but I may not be having the same experiences others are having. I have auto dimming mirrors on both our cars and really like the feature.

Okay, I'll chime in. I hate this feature. Always have. In my VUE, I would always get in and immediately shut off the auto dim feature. I understand that in the Outlook, much like the VUE, you can't change the settings to have the feature automatically off. Each time you start the car the auto dim come on.

I think the dimming distorts your view of the road, and is dangerous. I like to see things naturally.

I just wish you could order the mirror with the compass but not the auto dimming feature.

That's interesting. Maybe it's just personal preference. I don't ever notice any distortion, and I much prefer not being blinded by lights in my rear view mirror at night. I have this on my MINI Cooper, which may actually be more useful than it is on the Outlook, because I frequently have big old trucks shining their lights directly through my rear window in that car. With the Outlook, I'm high enough that this doesn't ever happen, so I would imagine it wouldn't be as "necessary" in this car.

I agree whole heartedly with Stiffi.
I also hate it for the same reasons. In my other vehicle on the very rare occaision someone would drive behind me with their high beams on I would just easily flip the rear view mirror up so the lights did not appear so bright. That was much better for me than barely being able to see whats behind me the other 99.999% of the time when there is no highbeam shining in my rearview....

See and that is what I always have liked about the auto dim mirror. It doesn't dim simply when it is dark, only when there is a bright light shining into the mirror, so most of the time, you actually see more at night than you would with a manually dimmed mirror. This is also nice during the daytime when you get reflections from the sun off of someone's windshield right into your mirror, it will dim the mirror to reduce the glare automatically.

OUR OUTLOOK HAS THE AUTO DIM MIRRORS AND WE LOVE IT. I ONLY WISH THEY WOULD HAVE PUT THEM IN OUR SKY RL. SITTING SO LOW TO THE GROUND AND CARS COMING UP SO CLOSE TO THE BACK OF US AT A STOP LIGHT. IT BLIND YOU. ITS HARD TO LOOK UP AND SEE THE STOP LIGHT. OH WELL, GIVE A LITTLE -TAKE A LITTLE.
