Can someone explain what the dots are on the navigation route. I'm thinking it is a "trail" of where I mostly travel.

You are right, it is a trail. I've also heard it referred to as a breadcrumb trail. There is an option (somewhere - i found it eventually), that can turn this on or off.

I think it is for tracking if you go off-road or an are where the roads aren't in the system.

Push in the knob on the right hand top with the musical note over it.
It will take you to the settings/adjustment screen.
Select the NAV tab.
Touch the Off-Road Mode so the dot to the left is not orange.
All done.
