Have followed the various threads on gas mileage...some folks getting very good mileage and some folks getting not so good. Thought I would post this up and, moderators, should you want to marry this thread with other gas mileage threads, think it would make sense. Your call. Sorry, this will be a little long winded.

My 09 Outlook XR FWD was purchased on 7/28/09. This Saturn has all the options except heated/cooled seats (wish I had stumbled onto one with it). Needless to say we are very pleased with her. As I will be occasionally towing with her, stopped off at my local landscaper/stone/mulch provider and determined the actual weight, with a full tank of gas, is 4,940 lbs (without me in it)!! Rear Air, Sky/Sun Roof, Trailer Package and all Power Seats/Tailgate probably add to the ballparked weight of 4,700 + lbs. Ive read here. Our initial tank of gas was just over 15 mpg. We attributed this low start out # to just learning all about the vehicle (it DOES have a lot of technology. As we got to the 3rd tank, we found that the 2/3 highway 1/3 city running with the air for approx. 25% of the time generated 19 mpg.

Well, we just got back from a 2 day trip. I am impressed!! Here in SE Michigan, we dont have too many hills. Our first leg of this trip was from Chesterfield Township, MI to Granger, IN. Initial miles on this XR at the start of this trip was 1,056 miles. We logged a total of 319 miles of which 58 was strictly stop and go around town and 261 miles were interstate. I did not notice any head or tail winds on this trip. Was clear and dry...great start to this Labor Day weekend, eh? Decided to set the cruise to 65 mph. I AM in the habit of running at 70-72 mph but resisted doing so with this vehicle cause Im experimenting...I want to know where this vehicles sweet spot is on mpg. In other words, how fast can I go and still get 24 mpg or better. Oh, I should back up here. The XR was loaded with my wife, Cali the dog, and I plus 4 mounted steel wheels/tires (18 inch takes offs from a 2010 Camaro) plus overnight luggage (we probably had 600 + lbs. with all this).

We did stop twice to stretch our legs, run our dog and whizz LOL. First highway trip for this Outlook and we pumped 14.5 gallons on 319 miles of driving. Up to this point I did not pay attention to the DIC calculated gas used/average mpg etc... I just reset everything to zero. On our return trip we decided to drive down to Auburn, IN and take in the museum and activities there. I set the nav unit to shortest route which took us through small towns, all 2 laners with some stop and go. Beautiful country drive! Spent the mid morning/early afternoon then hit the road for home.

Chose the fastest route from Auburn, IN to Clinton Township, MI (luv this nav unit!!). Decided to set the cruise to 60 mph from the get go. Guys and gals, this was VERY boring to drive that slow of speed on the interstate! But, I stuck it out and watched the mileage rise from 20.2 from Granger to Auburn to a DIC indicated 24.2 at a rest area (about an 1 and half hours from home) on I94. Decided enough of 60 mph and kicked the cruise up to 65 mph. Kept her that way till we got off the interstate near home. Watched over that next hour and a half as the mpg on the DIC gradually rose from 24.2 to 25.2!! Just a sidebar on this. The tach indicated a 1,600 rs spin at 60 mph and 1,700 rs at 65 mph. Just before pulling in the driveway, I gassed her up. I pumped 11.25 gallons of gas and covered 283 miles. That calculates out to 25.2 mpg!! What I was pleasantly surpised to find is the DIC ALSO calculated that I used 11.2 gallons of gas and indicated I was enjoying 25.2 mpg!!! So, did I say I was impressed??? You BETCHA!!

On my next road trip I am going to see what happens setting her at 67 mph does for her as well as 70 mph. All this to find that sweet spot.

Stay tuned.

Regards,

Jim

Very nice! Thanks for the detailed description!

We have had our 09 XR for 2 weeks now - we are averaging 20.3 MPG - we've driven about 1100 miles. (HWY trip to Shreveport from OKC) and normal around the OKC area (which is mostly hwy anyway, with moderate stop and go to get to the hwy and back to home from the hwy).

It's very easy for me to see how anyone could get terrible gas mileage with the Outlook - however - it's also easy for me from 1100 miles experience to see how to optimize economy. The transmission is great - either way - No complaints so far! I can now tell just about every shift point from feel.

So - you HAVE to drive this engine/Trans correctly to get the EPA numbers - or better.

Thanks again for the info COCOA

Wingmn you are so right about driving style. If you are inclined to keep your foot in it around town, leaving a light with your foot in it, your mileage will suffer. Watch how long it takes as you spin her to 3,000 rs or more to see the tach start to fall as you shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd. Getting in tune, so to speak, when this 6 speed shifts to the next gear is a learning experience and does require some discipline in keeping your foot out of it without running around town like a snail, pissing off the guy behind you. It is a balancing act. I tend to try to keep her as close to 2,000 rs as she shifts through the gears getting up to speed. Like you I am not experiencing any hesitation or lag when I tip in to the gas to get around traffic.

:) The 2,000 rpm mark is the target for me as well - keep below whenever possible. And yes, I regularly agitate other drivers behind me when pulling away from stop lights. Thankfully most of the roads around me are double lane, so people can go around. My current tank average is 22.4 after close to 200 miles. :)

Thought I"d post up a current experience to this. Have posted this on the "other" Saturn site.

I'm in the middle of probably a 3,500 mile trip.

My 09 Outlook is equipped with the 288 horse version of the DI. She turned 7,211 miles on the last tankful. I'm running Mobil 1.

My first 4 tanks on this trip are as follows:

Per DIC:

275.7 Miles 351.0 Miles 244.3 Miles 234.5 Miles

15.9 MPG (Worst) 21.3 MPG 22.5 MPG 24.7 MPG

17.3 Gals Used 16.5 Gals 10.8 Gals 9.5 Gals

21.8 MPH Avg 48.9 MPH 55.6 MPH 63.2 MPH

My actual gallons pumped were on the high side within .4 of the above.

The first tank does reflect mainly city driving here in cold SE Michigan as evident by the average mph.

My trip has taken me through Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Presently, I'm in Georgia on our way to some sun and warmth in Florida. Drove in snow, rain and fog primarily Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee...yuk ::).

I kept the cruise set initially at 65 but kicked her up to 68 by the start of the 3rd tank. Noticed the DIC running average miles per gallon @ a steady 68 mph creeped up to 25.3. Decided to kick her up to 72 towards the end of the 3rd tank. The DIC didn't drop much, down to a running average of 24.7 to 24.9, Frankly, I am impressed. I'm carrying 2 adults, 2nd row seat with stuff and behind that wall to wall closet (the wife's) LOL! Figure we're loaded with 650-700 lbs. My Outlook weighs 4,940 lbs empty with a full tank of gas. IMPRESSIVE! Had taken her to a landscape facility this past fall and had her certified on their scale.

I have not used the manual mode of shifting but, rather, allowed the cruise setting to sense when to kick down to 5th and sometimes 4th in the hills/mountains of lower Kentucky and the Smokies of Tennessee. She humms right along. I am impressed with the torque when the tranny calls for her to accelerate. She gets up and gets it!

Can you say luvin this LAMBDA? I can!

Jim

Are you one in the same 6Sixathome?? Are you near South Bend? Anyhoo, yeh, I am enjoying her. Wish I could see that game. :sosad: We're in Indian Rocks Beach, Fl, just south of Clearwater. Temps were a high of 73 F today. Can you say I"m not missing the snow? :)

Ya, it's me. Just thought I'd mix the name up a little, I'll change it back when I'm tired of it (just changed it :-\). Lucky dog, wish I was in FL!

When we went to FL in DEC, we were fully loaded---6 people, roof top carrier, behind the 3rd row packed up to the window and between the captains chairs filled to the brim, (and my wifes purse probably 200#'s ;D) we were loaded to the max and I averaged 19.5 to 21 mpg so I thought that was great :thumb:. In the hills she shifted between 6th and 5th a bit but that's to be expected.

Over all I have been please with both the Outlook and now the Acadia on MPG. I have not seen a difference in MPG between the original 3.6 and now the DI. We are just going to have to live with not so great city driving. I didn't get mine for great city MPG but for size and comfort. To me it's kinda like if you can't do the time, don't do the crime. If you can't afford the gas, get a motorcycle.

My thoughts exactly; I always know when I get the Acadia on the road she will pull 20-22 mpg so I drive her easy in the city and usually get ~15-16

Same here on the OUTLOOK, now my VUE gets really bad mileage in town like 13/14 but kills it on the highway 25+'ish.

So it seems that GM vehicles are geared out for the open road; I am a little suprised your VUE doesn't do better around town; that's a 4 or a 6 cylinder

3.5 V6 That's when GM put Honda drivetrains in the VUE's . I took it to a Honda dealer once and said "can you work on my Vue if I need it?" They looked at me like, no we only work on Honda's and Acura's, I said you'll want to see this ;D. He said yep it's one of ours......duh ??? I keep my foot in the gas a little bit, it sounds good and it blows the other ricers away :D ;D. Oh ya it's all polymer body panels, so no weight. The OUTLOOK gets driven nice and easy, no hot rodding there :nono:.

Interesting; so maybe your "foot in the gas" drives down your mileage ;D
