Re: got screwed at the used car lot

If you bought it from a GM dealer, I'd say you've got a beef with them for selling it with a used engine. If you bought it from another kind of dealer and they sold it touting that it still has a power train warranty, then I'd say you've got a beef with them. Not sure you'd make either of those things stick, however.

If it is a used engine, not original, then you're likely on your own, unfortunately. I doubt GM is going to honor the warranty on an engine they didn't put in there. The only reason it would get a used engine while under the power train warranty would be that the engine failed due to improper maintenance, or possibly the person simply didn't know about the warranty. I can't think of another reason.

At any rate, it stinks. Hopefully you can get it worked out without it costing you too much.

i Bought it from a chevy dealer with 75k in 09. The vehicle still had 3 yrs 25000 miles left of the powertrain warranty. This was a general motors dealer. Regardless of what was done to the vehicle befor i owned it i shouldnt be penalized. I still havent heard from general motors customer service reguarding the issue its at a corporate level now but its taking forever. Oh and its not just a used engine its a used junk yard engine. The junkyard puts lead tabs on the motor when they sell them to you so if you overheat the engine they will know if you bring it back and 1 of my more advanced techs pointed it out to me but i never beleived him til now. So far my experience with this dealer is horrible they told me i had bad steering rack so i let them replace it under warranty and my noise issue still continued. I let my techs at my garage take a look it was just a bad sway bar link. Oh and when they replaced the rack they left the sub frame bolts loose. Than i had a check engine light so i took it back again of course to the dealer i bought it from 3rd time there but no one notices its a used engine but anyways they had to replace the throttle body and connector from the pcm to the throttle body but when they did they ran 16 gauge wires right over the manifold they didnt even bother to tuck the wires back where they were from factory. Now its at the dealer down the street and not even there for 45 min and i get a call that its a used engine and not under warranty. Sneaky Sneaky Sneaky

I would think that this is a sign of a re-manufactured engine, not used. Junkyards typically don't give much if any warranty on a used engine, but a re-manufactured one will carry a decent warranty and they want to make sure any warranty repairs aren't due to overheating. I had a re-manufactured engine put in my '88 Caravan and it came with a 3/36 warranty and had those heat tabs on it. I had an issue with one of the tabs coming off and getting in the timing gear (they aren't supposed to come off, the center melts away). The tab didn't get attached properly and they warranted the repairs, after a bit of a fight.

That is what you need to find out is if the engine was replaced by a dealership. If so and it was replaced under warranty it should still be covered.

Have a dealership run a "vehicle history report" and it will show if a dealership replaced the engine and which dealership it was and what the mileage was on the engine, original and new.

Also, if a GM dealer sold it to you and told you it still had a power train warranty, I think you have a case for coverage. I certainly would have expected a GM dealer to know that this was a replacement engine and to point it out at the time of sale. It may mean a case against that dealer, though, and not GM.

I'm no attorney, however, so what will actually stick is another matter.

So I got the rundown on what happened before I owned the vehicle. The previous owner didn't do proper maintenance with the vehicle than brought the vehicle in with no oil the dealer would not warrant any of the repair so customer traded it in and they slapped a used motor. That's fine but why didn't they inform me at the time of the sale I should have been giving the chance to make the decision but since I was shown a clean car fax and the car drove very well during test drive I took the car and now 2 yrs later 10,000 mi later I'm having theese issues. Does anyone have any advice cause now the dealer I purchased the car from is towing it from the dealer its at back to their dealership I mean wtf im so pissed off I feel like an idiot for letting myself be taking advantage of I haven't driven it,in,a month and a half and im still paying for it have no car they didn't offer a rental they, still don't have an answer for me. Now they want to rip out the motor and check to sews if the chain is stretched on cylinders 135 I asked y they couldn't just do a compression test and was told this is how its checked on these vehicles

I'd get in touch with Michelle ("GM Customer Service" here) and start a case and when I got a GM rep on the line I'd give 'em an earful about the dealer. I'm not sure there's much they can or would do, but it can't hurt.

Then I'd call the dealer and go strait to the general manager and give him the riot act. Keep calling him until you get results. I have a friend who was the service manager at several dealers and in his experience GMs don't like to be pestered with individual customer problems and will give the service guy room to take care of you so you'll leave him alone.

To add a used engine and sell it with no comment may not be illegal, but it's not cool in my book.

Well the dealer pulled the motor out but still dont have an answer for me they say the head could be bad. I asked if they checked the chains and didnt get a clear answer. If they have the motor out of the car they can easily pull the timing cover off and check for a stretched chain bad tension etc i asked if the timing marks line up and he said hed have to ask the mechanic i mean this dealer is completely unprofessional i have to chase after them for answers no one calls me i have to spend hrs calling trying to get in touch with the sales manager or service manager i havent used my truck since march 27th they finally today just offered me a rental. I told them i dont want the vehicle that id like to trade it in for something else they ran it by the banks and i got turned down cause i owe too much but i think the dealer needs to work something out since they committed fraud by not disclosing to me that the vehicle had a used engine i think im gonna contact the attorney general and see what my rights are i mean i dont wanna keep dealing with issues with the truck there has been so many lies im just soo not happy with this whole deal my stress level is through the roof my financial situation isnt the greatest right now plus my fiance is pregnant with our 2nd child my son is sick and we only have 1 car i cant afford to drive 2 hrs to get the rental and than prolly get it on e and have to get gas and drive another 2 hrs home i mean these people have screwed me here and gm customer care has said im on my own that i have to deal with the dealer directly since it was the dealer who comitted the act not general motors yes a general motors dealership they need to own theyre mistake i mean am i wrong here???

K so I heard from the dealer on thursday afternoon. Apparently these motors are interference motors and my vehicle jumped time. The cylinder 3 piston crashed into the valve and kaplooee they do not know what caused the problem but back in the beginning i asked them if they compression tested the vehicle and they said they had to follow theyre procedure but if they had they would have known right off the bat that they had no compression since i had a bent valve. They are replacing the entire motor heads and all. I still am worried about what lies down the road but i do feel more secure now that im getting a new motor. They gave me finally a loaner an 09 traverse awd i have to say very nice even though i think my saturn has more balls i guess maybe cause of the different 3.6s but hopefully i dont have any more major issues crossing my fingers

So what was the result? I am also having motor problems, likely the coils and plugs again so not as serious as your problems.
