I took it to the dealer today (at 3500 miles) and they charged $41 (including tax) to change the oil.....with a "free" car wash, interior vaccum and topping off fluids thrown in.....

They used Exxon 5W-30 oil.

Sorry, doesn't look like it complies with GM 6094M specification for this engine.

See: http://www.exxon.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLEXSuperflo.asp#SpecsApprovalsTitle

Page 6-11 of the owner's manual: Engine oil which meets GM Standard GM6094M and displays the American Petroleum Institute Certified for Gasoline Engines starburst symbol. To determine the proper viscosity for your vehicle’s engine, see Engine Oil on page 5-13.

As I suspect, many dealers don't think there is a difference among premium oils, but apparently there is. This engine is definitely different from the usual overhead valve Detroit engine. It is overhead cam variable valve timing and much more sensitive to oil type and additive package.

Thanks for the feedback. I will swap the oil out myself (after a few hundred miles) and put Synthetic in.
Not using the oil reccomended in the owners manual can't invalidate the warranty if the incorrect oil was used by the Dealer.....right??

I switched over to Mobil 1 5W-30 Full synthetic at the 1500 mile mark. Then changed oil at 6000, 12000 and now the 18000 mark is approaching. Oil and tire rotations every 6000 miles.

No, but I'd be really mad at the dealer. Don't know what I would do, but you can always ask for them to put your supplied oil in at no charge. The filter should be OK, so don't change that.

I changed my oil and had no problem. I know that there are quite a few folks who said that they got oil all over the frame but I tried something and didn't get a drop of oil on the frame. You have to do this when the engine has cooled and be sure to have a paper towel or an old rag handy. First, take a kitchen garbage bag and roll the open end back about 4 times. Next, place the rolled edge of the garbage bag between the oil filter and the drip edge (or whatever it's called) getting the rolled edge back as far as you can. Open the garbage bag and loosen the oil filter (one hand holding the bag in place and one hand unscrewing the filter). When the filter comes off, continue to hold the filter until you wipe off the drip edge with your paper towel. Next, put the paper towel and old filter into the garbage bag and dispose appropriately. Give it a try...it worked for me.

Here' a handy list of GM spec GM6094M approved oils.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Exxon Superflow is listed on pg 2 of that GM approved oils? Did I read that wrong?
