We have a 2008 XR FWD that has 45,000 miles on it and the power mirrors no longer fold, it started with the Driver's side first, but now both are having the same issue. I can hear the motor spinning, so I took the driver's side off initially to see if the gears were broken or something got in there, but I couldn't find any way into casing to check, I don't want to break them. So I contacted my local dealer and she said it was around $900 for the mirror,
. Her exact response:
I try not to deal with the dealer unless I have to. We brought the Outlook in for the leaking sunroof for the 3rd or 4th time last year and when I started to take off the door panel to remove the power mirror I noticed that they never put the screws that hold the panel on back in after the work was done. They also mashed up the cover on the rear door, so I try to avoid dealing with them, it seems pride and work don't exist there. Does anyone know if I can get into the housing and how it is done without damaging the mirror? I know I can get 2 new ones from Rock Auto ($129.89 ea.) and get them painted for less than the price of one from the dealer. They are easy to get off and put on myself. Any other ideas? The cost of the mirror is $646.45. To paint the mirror it would be $125.00. Installation is $124.00. Total cost to replace the whole mirror would be $895.45. Because the mirror is so expensive I would definitely recommend we take a look at the mirror first to verify if it does in fact need to be replaced.
