The gas struts/hinges for the hatch back are going bad.

Anybody here ever replace these and are they easy to do?

Or should I just have a dealer or order them and have my mechanic install them.

Thanks!

Liftgate struts should be pretty easy, but there are several different mounting styles. Some use metal clips that you'd remove and others bolt on, I think, but it's been a long time since I had to change any. Can't imagine it'd take more than 30 mins to do it.

I'd find a forum for the VUE, surely someone there has changed them before.

The ones on my 03 VUE are getting soft. Not bringing up the lift gate as high as they once did. Probably in a year or so will need to be replaced and I will have my mechanic do the work. I had a couple other hatch backs way back when and they both had issues at least 3 years after I purchased them. I think I am doing great with the 03.

Im pretty sure Ive seen auto parts have universal replacements.
You can look into those- and if not ebay and Amazon.
If you snap a pic of them- we can tell you if they appear easy to replace.

I'm surprised at all the strut replacement talk here. My Odyssey still wore it's originals at 203K miles and 9 years old, my Escort as well at 184K and 12 years old and my Mazda3 still has it's originals at 5 years old and 90K. I'd stay away from the GM replacements, it seems they use a sub-par supplier for these things.
