We just bought a used 2008 XE. The previous owner had lots of fancy stereo/video equipment in it and took most of it out. The vehicle did not come with any remote fobs, so we bought some online. I've gone through the programming, using the DIC, holding down both buttons, but the car never responds to either remote. I have verified that these are the correct type of FOBs, that the batteries are good in the FOBs, and that I am in the programming mode. I am wondering if the previous owner had a fancy alarm system that he also took out, and had disabled the built-in remote unlock system. If so, is this something I can hook back up?

Look on your Service Parts Identification label in the glove box for RPO code AP8 (Lock Control, Remote Entry, Extended Range), this would indicate if your vehicle is equipped for Remote Keyless Entry. I would suspect it does have it and that the prior owner likely ended up disabling it somehow.
