Hello,
I own a 2008 Outlook that we purchased new in 12/07, and I just noticed on the underside of the front hood some rust forming on the "fold" of the metal lip - I never had this on any other car I owned - what are my options here (I have not taken it to dealer yet, I just noticed it while filling up at a gas station today during lunch) - I attached a picture to help with the description (the paint is peeling in that spot also)...
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Unless there are obvious signs of abuse (slamming the hood while a screwdriver was there type of thing) this should be covered by warranty. All it takes is one spot not to get painted and the rust will grow. I think your first step is to take it to the dealer. If you don't trust what your dealer might say, take it to a reputable body shop for an estimate and possible cause, then go to the dealer and see what they say.

mikek, :welcome: I'm still trying to figure out where this pic is at on you OUTLOOK. 6yr warrenty on rust, I say take it to the dealer if your Saturn dealer is open, if not call Saturn Customer Service, they will point you in the correct direction.

Thanks for the quick answers so far you guys - the picture is with me standing at the front bumper facing the engine, with the hood wide open and me (cell phone camera) looking up at the underside of the hood (the rust spot is about a foot to the drivers side of the center of the hood - underside where the metal is folded over to form a lip).

OK, I know where you are at now. Bummer :sosad: :eek:hno:. Atleast warrenty will get you fixed up as good as new. Now go over your OUTLOOK with a fine toothed comb and look for other rust, they may as well fix it all while they are painting stuff. Good luck.

This is from the Saturn website:

Covered for 6 years/100,000 miles2
Corrosion Protection
Saturn vehicles are designed and built to resist corrosion. All body and sheet metal components are warranted against rust-through corrosion for 6 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Application of additional rust-inhibiting materials is not required under the corrosion coverage and none is recommended. See your Saturn retailer for terms of this limited warranty.

I double the mere presence of rust is going to be covered. Good luck.

Nope, not yet - I have a few more weeks before oil change is due, so I will take it in then. I also have trans fluid seepage at the right side of the trans (FWD) at axle seal - the last time I was at the dealer (a few months back for previous oil change and tire rotation) I showed them and they said it was a seal that needed to be replaced (but they had to order the part, and that they would need the car for one full day, and then they said since it was not leaking much, only seepage right now, the next time I am in for an oil change they would replace the seal (and free oil change and car rental) - I have kept an eye on the trans leak and so far not worse - but, the rust on the hood is getting bigger with more rust and bubbling as well now (all on the underside so far).

Yep the trans leaking is from the torque converter hub seal, both of my OUTLOOK's had this. Does it look like this? That sucks on the rust issue, does your dealer know about it yet?

It looks a little like that, but the lower side of trans case on mine is all dark/dirty from the road grime sticking to the fluid.
Mine is only (like its a good thing!) leaking from the right axle side - is that where your two were and was it fixed successfully?
Nope, I have not talked to them about the rust yet - I figured it would be better to tell them in person(?).

I am also noticing now (in the colder Chicago weather) what sounds like slight metal on metal tapping in the front end as I drove over small road bumps (but I do not hear anything over large speedbumps, more like whenever I go over small indentations in the road) not change with steering or engine, more like suspension?

The 07' I had leaked at the right axle seal as well as the torque converter hub seal and just the torque converter hub seal on my 09'. I would tell the dealer ahead of time about the rust issue so they can schedule the work and so they are aware of the issue. Have them check your sway bar end links and strut mounts for the tapping you are hearing. How many miles do you have on it?

Good you will be in warrenty for what ever they find. Keep us posted on what all they have to do. Are you going to a Saturn dealer still or a Saturn authorized service dealer?
