Have a 2007 Outlook, and have been very happy until it reached about 45K miles last Spring. About this time several issues started to develop but the 1 that is most concerning and annoying is the squeal coming from the steering wheel/column when turning the wheel at low speeds. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be or what could fix it?

First check if your power steering fluid is low. You need to remove the oil filler cap, then the black cover on top of the engine to check it. Some have had to have the power steering fluid cooler replaced due to a leak.

Mine leaks. Looks like the cooler was replaced as I can sneak a peek some non OEM hose clamps in that area. Going to keep an eye on it and the fluid level and address it in the warmer summer months. As long as the level is kept up everything should be fine.

If you level it up to snuff you may want to try some of those "band aid" fixes in a bottle in the lub Aisle at your local parts store. If that does nothing for your squeal you may have a bad Pump :(

At 83k My pump/rack was replaced a month or two ago when the dealer got it back on lease turn in.

There have been other "lambda" models having the steering and rack replaced. So far I have not experienced this with my Outlook.

Mine is going in on Wed to get new "bushings" for the steering rack, I guess this is to resolve the clunk in the steering when the wheel is turned a couple inches from center, I'll report back on this when the work is done.

Had these same symptoms, dealer found a TSB and ordered a new rack. I'm waiting for it to come in.

I had a 'clunk' when going over bumps while cornering a while back, they replaced both strut mounts and problem was fixed. Does not give me long term confidence in the front end...I'm at 36k miles.

I've had both strut mounts replaced too, how long have you been waiting for the steering rack?

Got the work done today, what they did was pull out the rack, remove the bushings and install new bushings Part#20908399 under bulletin #10-02-32-001A and perform allignment.

All is good so far, I hope it stays like that :thumb:

Is anyone still having a problem even after the part has been replaced. I have a deal pending for an 08 Outlook but it's has the same issue. The dealer promised to fix it but I'm still concerned.
Just got mine back yesterday. They replaced the ASM gear and tie rods, I believe. Seems to have fixed the issue; the service rep said the steering gear was very expensive. Also replaced both in and out hoses from the PS pump, and the line from the Trans. to the radiator. I can list the parts, etc. if anyone is interested; the paperwork is in the Outlook. Hope it holds up since I'm now out of warranty!

Not sure...I was told they were going to order a whole new rack, then she tells me they replaced the steering gear. I'll post the part numbers when I get home.

Here is what they did, I realized that 'asm' was abbreviated for assembly...:

"Installed 20964166: Gear (06508-CT)

Replaced steering gear asm. & transfer outer tie rods. Completed alignment."

They also 'Replaced both return power steering lines from steering gear to cooler,' to fix the leaking PS fluid.

The tie rods must have been good enough to transfer over to the new rack I guess :-\

What drives me :angryfire: about all these steering issues discussions...

"Steering Gear" is the SAME as "Steering Rack". GM officially calls it "Steering Gear"... which of course, confuses everyone who goes in for service and reports back what was replaced. Heck, when I was 1st told I was getting a bushing replaced in my "steering gear", er, "rack", I was thinking "Huh, they're putting a new bushing in the pinion gear on the rack & pinion?"

Ok, back to our regularly scheduled program...
