I have a 2007 Saturn Outlook with 48k miles. The water pump went out and the dealer is quoting me $608 to replace it. Sounds like a lot since the part is less than $200 and the labor looks like it takes about 2-2.5 hours.

The car is 1 month out of the Powertrain warranty (kills me that stuff is going bad with LESS than 50k miles on it) and GM doesn't want to cover.

Anyone else had this done and can tell me if this cost is out of the norm?

Assuming $100/hr labor rate, that's about right.

1 month beyond warranty and less than 50K plus this is a known issue. GM ought to step up on this, have you contacted GM directly? Send 'GM Customer Service' here a private message.

@technologicq, how are things going with your water pump situation in your Outlook? If you would like me to look into this for you, I will send you a private message with the additional information I will need to get going on this. Please, let me know what you decide.

I have a 2008 Outlook XR w/153,500 miles and have never had a problem until now - On a recent trip my car overheated, had steam/vapor coming out fron the engine compartment and got all the associated messages until I could get out of the highway and to a service station - Let it cool and added coolant - Technician indicated, without putting it up on a lift, it could be the water pump leaking - what is the approximate replacement cost? Could it be hoses/clamps? What else could it be?? Any suggestions??

Well, the first post in this thread shows about $600 from the dealer. Might be less from an independent shop.

I'd agree, 152K isn't bad for a H20 pump.

Glad I found this thread and others. Took the Outlook in for defroster issue. The blower works but air is not coming out of the defroster vents. They said a reprogram should fix that. It doesn't have a sunroof so the blower motor should be fine.
They found coolant seepage while they were looking at it and recommended a new water pump. We bought it in September 08 so it's 4 months out of warranty! The service tech called GM and GM said they would cover half. The service tech is going to see if she can get GM to do a little better.

Glad you mentioned that as I just found that customer service campaign notice for leaky water pump shaft seals and emailed it to the service tech. When she calls back I will quiz her about it. Although it did say it was for 09-10 Outlooks. Mine is an 08.
Mileage is 36k  Not a typo.

2008 Outlook just 100,000 miles, has been using coolant for a long time, not a lot, cooling system holds pressure for a long time.

I read a note on the Saturn water pumps where running the coolant low can reduce the lubrication to the water pump seal, leading to leaks.

I notice that the cooling system on these vehicles has an enormous reserve capacity, where you can run the vehicle with practically no coolant and it still won't show a temperature rise, then when you lose that last cup, the temperature rockets to the top.

From reading online, supposedly the dealer charges to drop the subframe for this repair. I was able to do it in my driveway using patience and regular hand tools. Be ready to be flexible and patient with the wrench, mm by painful mm of rotation when loosening the bolts.

Could be reasonable. My mechanic charged me $287 for the pump, $52.50 for a new belt, $5.15 for coolant. and $337.50 for labor to replace my w/p on a 2008. lots of labor to reach the front wheel drive pump. Yes look up a price on rock Auto for a pump kit about $125. The shop has overhead and they need to make a buck. Or you can do it yourself which I was not willing to tackle. Check out any extended warranty. I was sent a letter for the 2008 which extended it to 120,000 miles, mine went at 125,000. :angryfire:

Your dealer shouldn't be charging you anything, wasn't the pump recalled 2 years ago? (mid-2013) I got a letter in the mail for it from Saturn with a Reimbursement forum and instructions explaining what the issue was and what to do if it were to fail. Mine failed 2 months before I received the letter, The repair had costed me $300 reimbursed in full by GM. Or was it a svc bulletin...? I know they issued an extended warranty for the work 120,000MI.
