Took my 07 Outlook XR AWD to the dealer yesterday for an oil change and the service writer said that a (very) new recall had been issued for my vehicle in the past week. According to my service paperwork the recall is # "10287 - Premature Timing Chain Wear - Reprogram Engine Control Module."

I see several posts here mentioning stretched timing chains - but nothing about a related recall. I bought it in May 07 and only have about 22K miles so I'm hoping this recall will prevent a future problem. But, I'm still curious....

Does anyone know anything about this?

Is it possible damage has been done already w/ 22K miles?

How does reprogramming the engine control module stop premature wear?

Thanks!

There was detailed talk about this on the Acadia forum...I will try to post a link a little later.

The reprogramming entails lengthening the time it takes for the check engine light to illuminate (from 4 to 10 seconds...not sure why) and to reprogram the OLM to a much shorter interval. The cojecture is that the chain stretches because of worn out oil, but some people have surmised bad chain lots as well.

As for the damage, what were your oil change habits (length and type), driving conditions and your climate? Used oil analysis of these engines shows the OLM goes way to long even for synthetic oil.

Due to the availability of the required calibration, this program is being administered in
phases. This first phase will include the Cadillac vehicles only. You will receive a dealer

CTS, SRX, STS; 2009 model year Buick Enclave; Chevrolet Traverse; GMC Acadia; and Saturn
OUTLOOK vehicles equipped with a HFV6 engine, under certain driving conditions, and with
extended oil change intervals, the timing chain could wear prematurely and cause the
illumination of the Service Engine Soon light.

CORRECTION
Dealers are to reprogram the engine control module, including the engine oil life monitor.

VEHICLES INVOLVED
Involved are certain 2007 model year GMC Acadia; Saturn OUTLOOK; 2007-2009 model year
Cadillac CTS, SRX, STS; 2009 model year Buick Enclave; Chevrolet Traverse; GMC Acadia;
and Saturn OUTLOOK vehicles equipped with a HFV6 engine
Important: Dealers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using the
Required Field Actions section in the Global Warranty system.
For dealers with involved vehicles, a listing with involved vehicles containing the complete
vehicle identification number, customer name, and address information has been prepared and
will be provided to US and Canadian dealers through the GM GlobalConnect Recall Reports, or
sent directly to export dealers. Dealers will not have a report available if they have no involved
vehicles currently assigned.

The listing may contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle
Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other
than follow-up necessary to complete this program is a violation of law in several
states/provinces/countries. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the
follow-up necessary to complete this program.

Dear General Motors Customer:
This notice is sent to inform you that General Motors is conducting a Customer Satisfaction
Program that affects 2007 model year GMC Acadia; Saturn OUTLOOK; 2007-2009 model year
Cadillac CTS, SRX, STS; 2009 model year Buick Enclave; Chevrolet Traverse; GMC Acadia;
and Saturn OUTLOOK vehicles equipped with a V6 engine.

Your vehicle was designed and built to meet GM's high standards for quality and reliability.
However, we have determined that under certain driving conditions, and with extended oil
change intervals, the timing chain could wear prematurely and cause the illumination of the
Service Engine Soon light. Timing chain wear can be affected by the age of the engine oil and
driving conditions.

What We Will Do:
To ensure that your vehicle will not experience this condition, your GM
dealer will change the calibration of the engine control module, including the engine oil life
monitor, which in most cases will recommend more frequent oil changes. This calibration
change will be performed for you at no charge until February 28, 2013.

What You Should Do:
To limit any possible inconvenience, we recommend that you contact
your dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment for this repair.

Interesting that it'll mean more frequent OLM recommended changes. My 2010 isn't on the list, so I assume that either I have the new calibration or a new timing chain design. My OLM will go 10K+ if I let it, so if that's more frequent, what was it?

The cynic in me says the increase in the warning condition is so it's more likely to go out of warranty before it fails. Of course, it may be that the old interval was too conservative and GM was paying to replace chains that weren't really bad.

Thanks for the great information. I've generally ignored the OLM and stuck to oil changes near 5K miles. Most of the miles on my Outlook are under city driving conditions in a mild climate. I'll keep an eye on the OLM and see if remaining life seems to drop faster with the reprogramming.

Hmm, I've got about 70k on the clock on my Outlook so I hope I'm not "really" in that area where all of these timing chain issues are. I would hope that I would have noticed something by now. Watch, my motor will go to poop tomorrow and won't have any warranty to do anything about it.

Yes, All is good so far..

I thought the job was going to take a couple days but she dropped it off in the morning and had it back that evening. The SA told her the tech that did her car did her car and another Outlook that day.
Two timing chain replacements in one day :thumb: I wonder if they left the engine installed and dropped all the right wheel equipment to gain access

I guess practice makes for quicker work with more perfection....I would be a little leary of what they did.

This is a 12 hour repair job. Squeezing it down to about 4? Something doesn't sound right. What does your invoice say they did?

You have to admit that if there are some well seasoned techs out there who know what's going on and how to get stuff done, they will find different ways to do the job and do it right AND still make money. I think the more we see the chain replacements the more we will hear of techs doing the job through the passenger side fire wall, just saying :)

there is a tech bulletin out there that says to make it easier- its recommended to lower the engine....
so it sounds like its not 'required'.
note the 1st bullet
when timing the high feature V6---
Keep these items in mind before beginning the timing procedure:

•In a front-wheel-drive vehicle, it may be easier to remove the engine before beginning.
•When removing the front cover, be sure to remove the belt tensioner and all the bolts. Damage may occur to the block if this procedure is not followed.
•When removing the front cover, do not pry against or strike the cam actuators. This will cause damage to the reluctor or actuator.
•Intake cam actuators have marks on them for the Right Bank (R) and the Left Bank (L). They must be positioned respectively.
•Be sure to note the orientation of the injector wiring harness. The harness with connector should come out on the front side of the engine. If installed backwards it will cause misfires and/or fuel trim DTCs.
•4 screw Delphi and 5 screw Aisin cam actuators are interchangeable, but will require the correct shim behind them when applicable. 4 screw Delphi actuators use a 0.043 in. shim and the 5 screw Aisin actuators use a 0.063 in. shim.

If the tech can do the work through the fire wall then :thumb: I guess that may be better than taking a bunch of stuff apart that could cause an issue down the road :-\

I know when the Saturn dealer did the trans work (torque converter hub seal) on mine they did everything through the fire wall, trans out and in, it did look like it was a bear because I can can see scrapes on the frame where some bolts are that may hard to get to. Maybe the drivers side of the engine is easier to get to :-\

I thought something didn't sound right either but all is well now. I don't have her invoice in front of me but I do remember it listing 2 of one kind of timing chain and 1 of another, seals, gaskets, thrust washer, R-134, oil, oil change and a couple of other things.. She also had the transmission serviced while it was at the dealership

One thing it did not list was anything having to do with putting the car back in alignment.

I really do trust the GM dealership we have been going to compared the Saturn Auth dealership that told us the air bag light is triggering the p0017 code. I could probably go up to the dealership and ask how they are doing the chain replacement so quick and they would probably tell me.

Please do, so we all can know that there is a way that it can be done without pulling the engine.

Had my oil changed today (2nd of 4 freebies courtesy of GM's goodwill). Had 4,000 miles on the oil (Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30). Replaced with same (I supplied the oil, they supplied the PF48 filter). Got home and found a letter in my mail box asking me to call my favorite Chevy dealer to arrange an appointment to have "10287" done to her. Going in in the morning at 8 a.m. My XR's got 26,400 miles on her with no issues (as long as she'll start...knock on wood...no start has not happened since last November LOL). Oh, the OLM read 77% today. The oil pulled from this morning's change reflects an 89% interstate and 11% city type driving. That equates to 180 miles for each 1% drop in oil life. I'm sure that will change with this reprogramming. Think I'm going to continue to spend the money on oil analysis.

Jim, how can you be so specific re these %s ie 89 and 11?

But in any event 180 miles per 1% is reflective of very easy miles for your oil.

COCOA,
Had mine done a few weeks ago and at 595 miles on the oil, the OLM % reads 88%
