On February 2010 (56265 miles) my wifes 2007 Outlook have transmission problems and we took it to our local GM dealer. They replaced the clutch wave plate and 3/5/reverse.
On July 2010 (65289 miles) we took car in and complained that it was not shifting properly and was told that trans. was working properly at this time.
On March 2011 (82357 miles) took car in and complained about trans. and was told that it was operating as normal.
On June 2011 (87264 miles) took car in and complained about trans. and was told that it was operating as normal.
On October 2011 (93535 miles) took car in and complained about trans. and was told that it was operating as normal. they replace water pump under warranty at this visit.
On December 2011 (96911 miles) took car in and paid them $49.95 to diagnose trans. problems. they said they drolve it and trans. is wolrking as designed. they kept my 50 bucks.
On February 2012 (99399 miles) paid another 50 bucks and was told that throttle body would be replaced under warranty. told that this could be causing shifting problems. Check engine light on. replaced throttle body and was told that trans. was operating as normal.
On October 2012 (112121 miles) check engine light on, wont shift, but when you turn car off then on it resets and does not shift too bad. Check engine light goes off after about an hour. Paid another 50 bucks to diagnose and suprise!!!! They now says that i need a new transmission. Dealer wants to rebuild trans. and I just want them to put a remanufactured one in. They say the my responsibility for the rebuild would be 55% but they do not know a cost breakdown or a total. They have worked on this trans. before, why would I trust them to work on it again.
Do not feel comfortable about giving them an open checkbook and if I have to pay some then I want the remanufactured unit that has a warranty. Everyone I have talked to said that the reman. is the best because it has all the updates and bugs worked out of it. They said rebuild would have only 90 day warranty.
We have meeting with service manager tomorrow 11/23/2012 at 9:00am.
I feel that this has been an ongoing warranty issue from the 65000 mile mark and that they have just been stringing us along till the point that this car is out of warranty. I would like a reman. unit and would like to pay little to nothing and they will never see me again.
Also you may have wondered why we have been so patient with this issue. I work for a company that is a vendor for this deallership and I have been trying to keep my cool and not rain fire down on them. We are beyond frustration. We will talk to the service manager tomorrow. If I do not like what he has to say, who do I contact? someone from GM? or do I go straight to the BAR(bureau of auto repair)/DMV and open a case on this. Any advise or help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. VIN is 5GZER13747J118856. Dealership BAR# is AC171332. The case # when they worked on the trans. was 11231012. Thanks

Where are you located?
There is a member on the Acadia forum (keydiesel) and has his own shop and works on these all the time.
If youre in his area-- maybe thats where you can go instead.

I believe hes in Michigan.

heres a thread on him- and has pics of a trans he had taken apart.

This is what GM answer to me for my transmission went out on my 2008 Saturn Outlook XR AWD. I told GM that my vehicle was not safe on the road and had sudden acceleration problem and this is what GM expert have to answer to  :cheers:me with. "so my email could be read by GM and their employees and make joke and laugh at it". "No we know your vehicle is not safe on the road but we at GM does not care with happen to you or your love one and anyone else on the road". :angryfire:

MODIFIED - Received information pertaining to the response posted previously and that is was not a correct statement. If you wish to post problems with your vehicle that is fine but make sure what you post is correct and not misleading. GM employees (CSR) must share among themselves problems which many believe are problems and the CSR Michelle we have on this board we appreciate her being here.

So we got the car back today and they had to replace the torque converter and the transmission control module. Michelle transferred me to a nice gentleman named Ray to handle my case. He said that the dealership was working with me and that my responsibility was still 55% even though these problems have been around since the 57000 mile mark. They said that it would cost me $1150.00 to fix car. The service person even told me that they were going to replace one of the coolant lines and that these are usually not covered by warranty but that they were able to get it covered. When I looked at my invoice it stated that the tech had damaged the coolant line when they were removing the trans. They used all remanufactured parts and claim that the total repair came to $2200.00 I think I got ripped off. There is no way that this costs this much. Reman. torque converter is $150 and a reman. trans control module is $250. With 10 hours of labor @ $100 an hour that equals about $1400. 55% should be about $850.
Needless to say Michelle and Ray were pretty much worthless. Dealer said that GM was calling all the shots and GM said that the dealer had the decision making authority. All I got was double talk and not much else.
Filing my claim with the Bureau of Automobile Repair and the DMV tomorrow. Good going GM. Way to stand behind your product. :thumb:

@srio, after you local dealership diagnoses the Outlook, don’t hesitate to talk with the service manager about cost assistance. Please let me know how things are going when you take this in and we’ll go from there.

I hope you have a wonderful New Year’s Eve celebrating and be safe.

Michelle, Chevrolet Customer Service
I’ll be out of the office from 4:30pm EST today through 01/01/13.

For a transmission replacement, GM has a 6T75 remanufactured transmission option for $1800. I call :bs: on the $4300 estimate.

As for the dealership, since the 3-5-R waveplate is a manufacturing defect, being two months out of the Powertrain warranty, I would ask the District or Zone Representative to get involved to see what kind of "Goodwill" adjustment from GM could be applied in this situation.

There are three methods you can use to contact the NHTSA if you suspect a safety-related defect in your vehicle. You can take any (or all) of the following actions:

Call the U.S. Department of Transportation's Vehicle Safety Hotline: (888) 327-4236 or (800) 424-9153, toll free from anywhere in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands
Report the issue online at the NHTSA's vehicle safety Web site: http://www.safercar.gov/
Send a letter via U.S. Mail: U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Office of Defects Investigation (NVS-210) 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE Washington, DC 20590

I will be going here and filing a report - regardless of whether the "GM" Angels on this board can help with our predicament, I think the NHTSA needs to know what is going on - as I said, I and my 16 yo were almost killed because of the failure of my transmission which was misdiagnosed as "FIXED". I can't imagine the repercussions if a death resulted from the silly "wave plate" issue in these vehicles. Very worrisome!

@bek416, have you contacted the General Motors Customer Assistance Center yet? The reason I ask this question is, I would like to look into this for you, but if you already have an agent you have spoken with, I don’t want to step on their toes.

So Sunday at 69,000 miles my 2007 XR was visited by the wave plate fairy :banghead:. I took it to the local Dealer at 7am this morning,Kool Chevrolet. By this afternoon they had confirmed my suspicions that the wave plate broke. They also provided me with a free loaner. Stacey my service rep had also contacted GM and was able to get them to cover 60% of the repairs even though its over a year out of warranty. My cost will be no more than $920 and I'll have it back tomorrow. I'm not crazy about spending $920 to fix something that should have never broke in the first place but given the horror stories I have seen on the forums, I'm thankful for how my case has gone so far. If you're in the Grand Rapids, Mi area I would definitely recommend dealing with Stacey Dells at Kool Chevrolet. She was very understanding of my frustration and very helpful :)

@kcmt9368, I’m sorry to read about the wave plate failure in your Outlook.

On the other hand, I’m very pleased to read about your great experience with the dealership and Stacey. Would you like me to process a compliment to her and the dealership?

well I received my outlook back today as promised and everything appears good. And on top of it my cost came in less. Out of pocket ended up t $628. Stacey and Kool Chevrolet definitely deserve a compliment on my case. This isn't the first time I have dealt with this dealer ( first time with our Saturn) and I will definitely use them again if needed.

Wow kcmt9368 that turned out great. I am still waiting to hear back from GM. I called them when the problem first happened and the dealer knew it was a transmission issue by reading the codes and driving it. GM said that I had to agree to pay $1500 to have the dealer take the transmission out and apart to find out exactly what was wrong. I hesitated but after getting nowhere for a few days I finally agreed. They told me on Monday that it is indeed the 35R wave plate (shocker) and that the total cost for a rebuild is $2950. I told him to go ahead and do it because it was already apart. I called my GM rep back and left a message on Monday and this morning but still have not heard back. Now the car is ready to be picked up but there is a $2950 bill due and GM still has not stepped up to help at all. All this and I am less than a year out of the 5y warranty and only at 98k miles. I already messaged Michelle but she said that because I already had a phone rep that I ned to continue to work with them. I guess I will need to call and talk to someone else. Any other suggestions?

I guess I got lucky. My situation was very similar. They quoted me $800 to tear down the trans based on 8 hrs. To find out the exact problem. During that phone call I asked my rep if it could be related to the infamous wave plate failure and if it was would GM help with cost at all? She said they wouldn't know for sure until they were into the trans. But if it was she would fight for any assistance she could possibly get. So I too very reluctantly agreed to let them tear out the trans. I found out within 3 hrs. What the problem was and what help she was able to get me. This dealership has a pretty good reputation in town as far as I know. As unhappy as I was, I didn't go in yelling and screaming like some people do. I also believe my service rep actually wanted to help me out and not just make as much money as possible for the dealer. Good luck with yours, I hope it works out for you. Maybe if you tell them what GM did for me it might help. They called it a goodwill 60/40 split on My final bill.
